The Getaway Girls A hilarious feel good summer read about second chances Dee MacDonald 9781786814791 Books Reviews

  • I read this book straight after The Runaway Wife and preferred the faster pace of the sequel. However, both books cheered me up as they rabitted along - and I enjoyed recognising some of the places in France and Italy that I have visited in years gone by. Creating tension with Maggie fretting over her stolen dosh actually stopped the sequel from becoming just another travelogue. As I am roughly contemporaneous with the three protagonists, it was nice to see that the author did not have them falling apart at the seams just because they had passed the SixOh landmark. I can also attest to the amounts of alcohol glugged by the ladies as being very close to reality in France and Italy, tourist areas of. Easy to read both on my smartphone.
  • First, I of course love the cover...as cheerful and fun as the story! The cover does say "laugh-out-Loud" and "hilarious"...I didn't find that but it was an upbeat and different kind of read. The writer gives good descriptions of food, places and atmosphere which is always something I look for in a book...I want to feel like I'm there, almost in the story. Loved the ladies and really really like Alfie. I hope there is a sequel giving us details on Connie and hopefully the beautiful villa she builds on the property, Alfie And Gil still together and Maggie happily living in Australia. Would definitely recommend this uplifting and fun book.
  • I read "The Getaway Girls" right after reading "The Runaway Wife" both by Dee MacDonald. While I know this is light reading, I certainly wouldn't say either one was "hilarious" or "laugh out loud" (not sure why the publisher felt the need to push in that direction). I do wish there were more fun reads for the over 65 women who are active and upbeat (not obsessed with children or husbands/boyfriends). So, thanks to the author for that. Now I did like the character Connie in the first book. She was engaging, facing her fears, and felt very real. The Connie in Getaway doesn't even feel like the same person. I kept wondering why the author would change her so much. Her traveling companions seem 2-dimensional, and the dialog is repetitious (how many times do we need to hear that a man is hairy, about a new haircut, or anything more about bathroom facilities?). Yes, they are traveling through France and Italy but it feels very much like pages from a guidebook. Perhaps the author was rushed by the publisher to get a sequel out.
  • Connie, decides to take off on another adventure, after divorcing her husband of forty one years. She buys a motor home and ends up with two women, she has only known briefly, coming along for the ride. Going to Italy, via France to find her long lost relatives. Little does, Connie, Maggie, and Gill find, what they didn't even know they needed or wanted. I enjoyed every moment of my travels with these three seventy year olds.
  • This book had a good story line. It was humorous, but also had narrativevto follow. I had been to places the “Girls” visited. This made it even more interesting for me. Some other places I may want to visit based on the description.
  • This was a light, fun read. I enjoyed getting to know the three ladies. I could picture their many escapades! Just an all around fun book. I'm happy I read it!
  • I loved taking the adventure through parts of Europe with these old gals. While much of the story line was predictable, this was forgiven due to the interesting development of each character. There is an older reader out here that loves the theme which runs through both of her books, there is life and love after 60.
  • This was an enjoyable funny light reading! I found myself at times laughing out loud! I imagine me and my good friends going on a trip like this minus the stealing money part!
