Happiness A Little Guide To SelfLove And Positive Thinking Jill Hesson 9781539863595 Books Reviews

  • Generally speaking, I regard keywords such as “self-love”, “positive thinking”, “healing” and “inspirational” with the gravest suspicion. There is something sanctimonious and, frankly, morbid about the stifling sameness of this genre. However, having read (and liked) another short guide by Jill Hesson, I decided to give this a try.

The book is organized in 9 logical chapters dealing with various factors that combine to affect our mental state in our search for that most elusive of human conditions happiness. Hesson touches on the rampant materialism and out-of-control slavery to technology that have turned the dream of an automated society into a nightmare of keeping up with our sophisticated gadgets. She reminds us of the tangible benefits of physical exercise, the simple pleasures of appreciating the grandeur of nature, doing small acts of kindness, feeling grateful for everyday things, defusing guilt and self-criticism, and letting go of anger and resentment.

For example, in the chapter about Forgiveness she states, “... when you carry a grudge it is you who does the carrying and not the person at whom you aim your anger … the grievance may be totally justified, but that inability to let go of it is harming you and may not be bothering the offending party in the least.” How very true! And yet, this is such a common scenario. We need to acknowledge and quantify the self-harm that flows from resentment – and not so much forgive the perpetrator (which often is not possible) but rather release ourselves from the burden of being affected by something which is done and not fixable; throw away the straight-jacket of resentment like a garment that no longer fits and is preventing us from wearing something more comfortable and becoming.

Without giving specific links, the author refers to the findings of scientific studies done by this or that university, in support of her statements. The most interesting, to me, is the concept that we can override our default negative mindset and train our brains to perceive things more positively, much as we can shape our muscles with exercise. For the rest, there is nothing truly revolutionary, but the advice is sound and reasonable, and the sympathetic and unpretentious style appeals to me. Reading this book is like having a comforting chat with a good friend. It tells me what I already knew but was unwilling to put into practice.

The prose is not free from the odd typo, and some of the grammar is debatable, but these stylistic flaws are minor and do not detract from the core message. Any time I can get a nugget of wisdom, or an idea that is perhaps not novel or earth-shattering, but somehow makes sense to me, I consider that the book is worthwhile.

Included in the purchase is an optional free PDF copy of another short book, “Beginner's Guide to Meditation”. It requires you to provide an email address but, as long as you understand that your email will be added to a promotional list, the download is then immediately available.

As I am well aware of the time and effort that goes into writing and publishing a book, I believe that this short guide is well worth the small price and, if you can extract just one useful concept to apply in improving your life, then it will also be time well spent reading it.
  • Eventually someone did figure it out that the new technology is part of the increasing in Depression and loss of happiness and in fact it is not material goods but our own mindset and the brain that brings as to the point of distraction. This book is a revolution to us all to master the power to take back our happiness and get out of the darkness of Depression by controlling and discipline our brains like we control our muscles with workouts. After all everybody is striving to be happy. Page 185 is one of that WHOW moments. There is a lot of little precious jewels hidden in this book. Just look for them and make sure you keep them save. The advice in this book is spot on, valuable and full of experience. Be mindful when reading because if you do not have these fundamentals right you will never reach pure happiness.
