Guiding Those Left Behind in Pennsylvania All the Legal Practical Things You Need to Do Amelia E Pohl Esq 9781892407153 Books Reviews

  • Being suddendly thrown into the role of Executor when my Mom passed away plunged me into the complex world of handling an Estate. I took out every relevant book from the local library and found this State-specific book to be the most useful for my situation. No one book answers everything... you still want a lawyer (this author has a book about selecting lawyers which I'm going to check out). This book is worthwhile enough that I just ordered my own copy to have for ready reference. The author has this same subject for a number of other States.
  • When my mother-in-law passed away, we decided pretty quickly that we'd try to keep lawyers out of it if we could. The book guided us through the process extremely well. So well in fact that when we went to the courthouse to pay the estate tax on the estimated value of her estate and file some of the forms they gave us, I asked when do we probate the will and her simple response was, "you just did." All the nightmares I heard about probate when in fact it was a very simple process. They also told us at the courthouse that very few lawyers actually work to settle an estate, that it's more the job of their clerks and paralegals but of course they charge hourly based on the lawyers hourly rate. If you need to settle an estate in Pennsylvania, get this book. I have used it, and have loaned it to 2 other people who settled their parents' estate without the need for attorneys. It made an emotional, confusing, and a seemingly daunting procedure into one that we handled pretty easily.
