Lion Dragon Medieval Authentic OSR Roleplaying RPGPundit 9781979580915 Books Reviews
- Lion & Dragon is a complete role-playing game that is compatible with most OSR rules systems. I've had the rulebook for a few days now and have read through it. I'm not going to spend very much time covering the rules in the game because I plan on running it through Sword & Wizardry. Lion & Dragon is a well made and well written book. The art work is all well done and well placed and seems to be a mixture of public domain art from the period and some created for the book. What the book does really well is walking the GM through how to run a Medieval Authentic OSR game by explaining the medieval world to players so that referees can run a game that more closely reflects the reality of the medieval world. The game puts a lot of emphasis on life back in the medieval period and the magic system is based on what "magicians" from the actual period believed magic to be.
The rules system is easy for anyone coming from the original rules or other OSR games. I like that the skill system takes up less than half a page and it is modular enough to be used in a lot of different games. I want to end on how much of a joy this book is to read because of how well it was put together from the prose of the author to the production value of the actual book. The art is really brilliant and makes each page come alive with ideas by just looking at the selected pieces. I'm a big fan of the two column black and white layout that is the norm for the games I really enjoy playing. The Medieval Period provides a lot of great playing opportunity based on actual events, real locations, and real beliefs from the time. The only change I will make to the book is by not using the made up Catholic Church in the book and just slot in the actual Catholic Church. I do wish the author would have had some suggested reading to further players and referee's ability to gain background for the setting. The author does have a link to an online magazine that he will publish additional materials and I hope that he includes some additional reading suggestions for folks that want to delve deeper into the period. - A really clever OSR rpg. The thing that really sold it to me was the authentic medieval occultism. The class specific random benefits acquired with each new level of advancement for your character was also a very innovative idea.
- This is a well thought out and designed OSR style RPG. Great for people that want to play close-to-historical-realism while still having magic.
- L&D is easily the best book from TheRPGPundit. Concise and well-written, it's like a Chivalry & Sorcery clone I can understand without rereading seven times. If you're looking for an OSR game that provides a more "realistic" medieval gaming environment, pick this up along with Cults of Chaos and Dark Albion for the complete experience.
