First French Reader for Beginners Bilingual for Speakers of English Volume 1 French Edition French and English Edition Eugene Gotye Vadim Zubakhin Books Reviews

  • This is the best language book I've ever encountered. In fact, it's the only one that I've ever been able to finish. I had some French lessons a long time ago at school and then forgot more or less everything I had learned, so I'm more or less a complete beginner. This book gives you lists of words which you can read fairly quickly (many of them are similar to English words), then gives you simple stories based on the words you've just read. By referring back to the list occasionally, using Google translate and googling for tables of French verbs now and then, you can get through the stories quite quickly. The English translation of each story is also provided. The stories are fairly entertaining too! By the end of the book, when you get to the French-English dictionary, you'll find you've learned a huge number of words and can understand most of what's in the dictionary. OK, this book is only a first step towards actually speaking and using French, but it seems like a very big step for such a painless and entertaining book. I had a bit of a fright when the book started listing tables of simple past/imperfect past tenses of verbs in the words sections, but then I realised that you don't actually have to memorise these tables to understand the stories -- just scan through them so they aren't a total surprise when you encounter them in the story.

    All in all, I highly, highly recommend this book.
  • It is not as straightforward as my Spanish reader. I was hoping for a few sentences along the line of, "This is Maurice. Maurice is a man. He lives in Paris. This is Alexa...." etc. And progressively increase. It jumps in a little fast. But it is still a useful tool for practice reading.
  • Read my review of Book Two;
    Repetitive format is good for learners
    Some errors in grammar and vocabulary
    Easy and interesting stories
    Audio of stories online for listening and comprehension
    Author/Publisher ask for feedback on errors
    In the process of re-proof reading the text
    Good book for beginners/intermediate French students
  • I took some french in high school and wanted to brush up and advance enough to try and travel in France and / or understand French movies. For ten bucks (on kindle) this is a really good value given how much you could pick up. What I've been doing is reading the French, and then try and back-translate into French (on paper) using the English version. By "correcting" my work i figure out what i know and what i don't. The reader seems designed to teach you by example using adjacent sentences that are similar but illustrate situations where the same word in english would be translated differently into French depending on usage. It's easy enough to read the French version and think you know it, but the real learning (in my case) i believe comes with the work of translating. I have an old copy of 501 French verbs and that is useful once in a while as a reference. An important thing to understand about this book is that grammar is not explained - instead you infer the grammar rules from context by reading the example sentences. So i wonder if this would be a bit difficult if you never had any french before. Anyway, i am only about 10 chapters in but i can see that this book has helped me quite a bit. Regarding kindle - i would say this book does work with kindle but it would probably be easier in hardcopy form because you have french and english version side by side. One last point - so far i have noticed two or three very small possible errors (for example il should be elle) but i am not sure if it is just my bad french. I can see that the author would not want to be replying to all those students out there, but perhaps an email or website could be given listing any inevitable corrections that have been identified. especially with kindle, anyone pointing out an error should get a free update!
  • The publisher needs to do some editing. This book and the audio that can be downloaded from the publisher's website do not match. Synchronizing the book and the audio might improve this beginning level resource and make it more useful. Beginning level French students deserve better quality materials!
  • I'm enjoying reading all the wonderful stories. I highly recommend this book for beginners and intermediate French learners.
  • This book is really good for somebody that's starting to learn French, it has very basic vocabulary and each word is translated for easy understanding, if you are learning I recommend it if you already know some french there are plenty other books more helpful
  • It's a great learning tool, perfect design with the vocab and the stories build on one another in difficulty. I would recommend this book to everyone.
